Solution:
We can connect the items to figure it out. Connect 1 basketball with 1 soccer ball until there are no more to connect. Once the soccer balls are all connected, there are still 4 basketballs left. Which ball is more? There are more basketballs, which means there are fewer soccer balls. How many more basketballs are there than soccer balls? There are 4 basketballs that are not connected, so there are 4 more basketballs than there are soccer balls. We can also say there are 4 fewer soccer balls than there are basketballs.
When it comes to the keys and locks, we can use the same method. Connect one key with one lock until there are no more to connect. If there were 3 more locks, then all the keys and locks would be connected. So that means there are 3 more keys than there are locks, or 3 fewer locks than there are keys.
Solution:
- There are 2 fewer slices of cake than there are glasses of orange juice. Which one is fewer? Of course it's the slices of cake. First, let's make the slices of cake and glasses of orange juice have the same in number, then take away from the one with fewer. How many should we take away? There are 2 fewer slices of cake than there are glasses of orange juice, so take away 2 slices of cake. That leaves 2 slices of cake left.
- There are 3 more bananas than there are apples. Which one is more? Of course it's the bananas. First, let's make the bananas and apples have the same in number, then add 3 more bananas. Now just add the 2 parts together—5 plus 3 equals 8, so there are 8 bananas.
